This week (Monday or Tuesday) your child will have a word sort handout come home in their agendas. These are their spelling words for the week. Please try to practice them each night for a few minutes. Each list has a common element like short a or e words so once they get it, the words should be easier to spell.

What an amazing first week of school. It has been such a pleasure getting to know you and your wonderful children. I know they are probably coming home very tired. This is so normal!! For some kids it takes a week or two but for others it can take a month or even two to really get into a routine. Don’t worry it will get better!!
For next week our Show and Share will be something about themselves. They can bring in one item on their given day and talk to the class. It may help to have them practice a little at home if they get nervous easily.
I sent home the first home reading books in the agendas. I will be assessing students next week to make sure that they get a better fit level so don’t worry if the book they brought home is not quite right yet. At this stage “reading a book” may be only sounding out a word or two on each page and having an adult fill in the rest. As the weeks go on the expectations change and the students are encouraged to read more. Each child develops at their own level so don’t worry if your child seems to be at the same level as someone else. I will always let you know if I think there is an issue we need to look at. If you see an issue, please let me know so I can look for it too. Remember that we are working for nights read not books read. If your child can read 3 or 4 books in a night, they need to try a harder book. If you have missed placed the recording sheet, please let me know and I will send you home a new one!
Here is a look at our week.
Monday, September 10 Please remember to bring inside and outside shoes
Tuesday, September 11 Keep up with the home reading!!!! Remember to sign the sheet and bring it back in the agenda every day!
Wednesday, September 12 Reading Buddies- Our students will buddy up with the grade 4 students in Mrs. Rosner’s class
Thursday, September 13 Library Day
Friday, September 14 International Dot Day
Thank you for a wonderful first week. Please know that you can always contact me with any questions or concerns!! Marina Mik
I am very excited to get to know you and your child this year. Please feel welcome at any time to contact me. I have a Weebly set up that is connected to our school home page. Please check it often as I will be updating it each week with the news for the week!! Also I will be using Remind to let you know of any important information throughout the year so please sign up for it when the handout comes home.
Our class will have gym on Mondays, Wednesdays and on Thursdays. On Thursdays the students will dance with Mrs. Ens. Please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed to run around and have fun. They will need inside shoes to be kept at school. We will hopefully have library time on Wednesdays. Library books that have been borrowed for the week will be due this day. Please watch out for any changes to this original plan.
Our home reading program will begin in a couple of weeks. I have just right level books at school that the students are encouraged to take but any book you have will work. Students will get a record sheet sent home and will receive credit for each night they read. Make sure to have a parent or other adult sign or initial for each day that your child has read. At this age, it is very valuable to have students read aloud to an adult. If your child chooses to read silently, please ask them comprehension questions to ensure they did read and to help spot any troubles they may be experiencing. When your child has read twenty nights (not books), they` turn in their sheet for a small prize. It is hoped that students will read at least twenty nights per month. Other regular homework will include studying for a spelling test to be given on most Fridays. We will also be sending home a set of sight words each week. These will be copied down into their agendas. Once they have mastered that group, more will be added on. Please practice reading the words at home. In a few months, I will also send home some optional basic math facts booklets. Please check their agendas as any other homework will be noted there.
This year in our Language Learning time, we will be using the Daily 5 method mixed with a Guided Reading approach. In our class, we will be starting out very slowly and adding components as the students are ready. The 5 basic parts are Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work with Teacher (Guided Reading), Word Work and Work on Writing. We are using the Words Their Way as our spelling and word study program. Both of these programs stress individual learning at a level that is right for each child and building the love of reading! In Math we will be following a similar structure but with only 4 components. This includes Math Books, Math Journal, Math With A Partner and Math Tech. As we progress with them, I will fill you in with more details.
Our main theme for this year is Outer Space and Inquiry. Each month we will be studying a different celestial body and asking questions about it. The idea is to start asking questions and thinking about what is happening all around them. We will also be doing an “extra” science experiment each month to once again get the kids asking questions and start thinking about what they are learning. This month, we will start doing some Fall activities and learning about “Belonging to a Group“. In Science, we will start a unit on Colours. In Math, we are reviewing numbers to 20. We will also be doing basic addition and subtraction facts.
This year we will be having “Show and Tell” on a daily rotation: Monday – Teagan, Ginger, Karie and Caleb Tuesday – Giada, Anita, Ivy, Mason, and Oliver Wednesday – Briley-Jo, Leia, Jackson and Griffon Thursday – Penny, Harmony, Ronin, George and Jace Friday – Stella, Soa, Emmett, and Fyre
Each week there will be a different theme. Please check the weebly to find out the following week’s category. Please only send in one item per day. For the first week (Sept. 10-14), the students have been asked to bring in one item that represents them. Please note that students scheduled to bring on the day of a holiday can bring on the day before or after.
Students are encouraged to bring plastic, non-breakable, pull top or flip top water bottles labeled with their names for use during class time. Please be sure to only bring water. Other liquids can cause sticky messes. These can be taken home nightly or will be sent home Fridays to be washed and brought back.
Parents are welcome in our class! From time to time I will be putting out a call for help on the website. If you would like to help on a more regular schedule, please let me know when you are free and what you like to do. I am already planning October and would appreciate 3 parent volunteers to help out with some Thanksgiving centers on October 3. They should run from 8:50 to about 11:10 (with a recess break in there). Please send a note if you are free that day.
Every month I will be sending home some Scholastic Book orders. These are great books at usually a good price but they are totally optional. This month’s order is due on September 21. Please do not feel any obligation to buy from these orders.
The last page of this newsletter is a chance for you to tell me any things you think I should know about your child. Things like allergies, likes, dislikes, worries, family, or anything else you think might be helpful. This page is optional. Please do not feel obligated to fill it in. It is just another tool to help me get to know your child a little better. It can be returned anytime.
If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to contact me at school (327-4386) or at my home (328-4510). I am very excited to be working with you and your child!!!
Yours in learning, Marina Mikuliak
August 2018 I hope you all had a wonderful summer break. I am so excited planning for the upcoming year!! I will use this site as my main way of communication so please be sure to check it weekly once the school year starts. This year we will be doing a Space and Discovery theme. We will focus on exploring and asking questions. We want the students to think about things, take chances and make mistakes to learn from. Very soon the class lists will be coming out on the school website. Please feel free to contact me at anytime with any questions or concerns you may have. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at my home phone 403-328-4510. I will be updating this in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned for more information. The dates in the ImportantDates will soon be updated. Most of the ones listed are still from last year. Remember our grade one orientation is on Friday, August 31. I hope to see you there! Thanks so much!! Marina Mikuliak
