This month starts a very important time in your child’s reading development. Typically, we see the biggest gain in reading skills from January to April. It is very important to keep up with your nightly reading and sight word practice (10-15 minutes). Reading at home to reinforce what we are doing at school is vital at this time.
In January, we will continue to work on addition and subtraction to 10 and then to 20. I will be sending home some extra practice math worksheets. These are completely optional. I would much rather have you spend the time on reading but they are here if you want them. If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to bring in a pair of labelled inside shoes that can stay at school. It is a school expectation that the students change into inside shoes whenever they come in.

I am really looking forward to working with you all this year!!
Thanks to everyone that made it to our orientation on Friday. I know it was at a less than optimal time at the start of the long weekend. I was also a bit under the weather so if I didn't get a chance to meet you personally, please come in and introduce yourself next week!!! I would love to say hello! Most of what was covered is outlined below and a handout will be coming home. I have had a couple questions about supplies. If you can, I do like to label the pencils and pencil crayons with their names or initials. If you don't have time, don't worry. I will get to it next week. There were a couple of information items I like to have from you. If your child has any allergies, please let me know. I like to keep a chart handy on the board for subs or anyone else that may be in the room. Also I would appreciate knowing how your child is getting home at the end of the day on Tuesday and then if it is different on most days. The end of the day can be very busy and often young students forget what is happening. If you didn't sign up, please email me to let me know. Also if I don't have your email. could you send it to me so I can contact you!! Thanks so much!!!
I am very excited to get to know you and your child this year. Please feel welcome at any time to contact me. Please check this site often as I will be updating it each week with the news for the week!! Also I will be using Remind to let you know of any important information throughout the year so please sign up for it.
Our class will have gym on Mondays, Tuesdays and on Thursdays. On Wednesdays the students will dance with Mrs. Ens. Please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed to run around and have fun. They will need inside shoes to be kept at school. We will hopefully have library time on Wednesdays. Library books that have been borrowed for the week will be due this day. Please watch out for any changes to this original plan.
Our home reading program will begin in a couple of weeks. I have just right level books at school that the students are encouraged to take but any book you have will work. Students will get a record sheet sent home and will receive credit for each night they read. Make sure to have a parent or other adult sign or initial for each day that your child has read. At this age, it is very valuable to have students read aloud to an adult. If your child chooses to read silently, please ask them comprehension questions to ensure they did read and to help spot any troubles they may be experiencing. When your child has read twenty nights (not books), they turn in their sheet for a small prize. It is hoped that students will read at least twenty nights per month. Other regular homework will include studying for a spelling test to be given on most Fridays. We will also be sending home a set of sight words in the agendas. Once they have mastered that group, more will be added on. Please practice reading the words at home. In a few months, I will also send home some optional basic math facts booklets. Please check their agendas as any other homework will be noted there.
This year in our Language Learning time, we will be using the Daily 5 method mixed with a Guided Reading approach. In our class, we will be starting out very slowly and adding components as the students are ready. The 5 basic parts are Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work with Teacher (Guided Reading), Word Work and Work on Writing. We are using the Words Their Way as our spelling and word study program. Both of these programs stress individual learning at a level that is right for each child and building the love of reading! In Math we will be following a similar structure but with only 4 components. This includes Math Books, Math Journal, Math With A Partner and Math Tech. As we progress with them, I will fill you in with more details.
Our main theme for this year is Outer Space and Inquiry. Each month we will be studying a different celestial body and asking questions about it. The idea is to start asking questions and thinking about what is happening all around them. We will also be doing an “extra” science experiment each month to once again get the kids asking questions and start thinking about what they are learning. This month, we will start doing some Fall activities and learning about “Belonging to a Group“. In Science, we will start a unit on Colours. In Math, we are reviewing numbers to 20. We will also be doing basic addition and subtraction facts.
This year we will be having “Show and Tell” on a daily rotation: Monday – Aaliyah, Gabe, Hudson and Kai Tuesday – Jada, Taylor, Kayden, Logan, and Milan Wednesday – Zahra, Myla, Nathan, Ryan and Nixon Thursday – Olive, Payton, Roman, Sophie and Jacey Friday – Violet, Victoria, Emmitt, and Keaton
Each week there will be a different theme. Please check the weebly to find out the following week’s category. Please only send in one item per day. For the first week (Sept. 9-13), the students have been asked to bring in one item that represents them. Please note that students scheduled to bring on the day of a holiday can bring on the day before or after.
Students are encouraged to bring plastic, non-breakable, pull top or flip top water bottles labeled with their names for use during class time. Please be sure to only bring water. Other liquids can cause sticky messes. These can be taken home nightly or will be sent home Fridays to be washed and brought back.
Parents are welcome in our class! From time to time I will be putting out a call for help on the website. If you would like to help on a more regular schedule, please let me know when you are free and what you like to do. I am already planning October and would appreciate 3 parent volunteers to help out with some Thanksgiving centers on October 10. They should run from 8:50 to about 11:10 (with a recess break in there). Please send a note if you are free that day.
Every month I will be sending home some Scholastic Book orders. These are great books at usually a good price but they are totally optional. This month’s order is due on September 19. Please do not feel any obligation to buy from these orders.
If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to contact me at school (327-4386) or at my home (328-4510). I am very excited to be working with you and your child!!!
